I was just reading about that tonight in Temple Grandin's new book, Animals make us human. There's a chapter on pigs and pig farming, and how best to house pigs. They are very smart and need room to root and to socialize. Too many pig farms keep pregnant sows in a cage they can't even turn around in and must stand much of the time until their ankles and legs collapse. Other pigs are kept in very small spaces and they aren't allowed to socialize so that their fear factor is very high. This affects the quality of their flesh once they are slaughtered.

They love to root around in straw and like to be in social groups, plus have enough room to roam around a bit. If they are cramped and not allowed to root around in straw, they will bite off each others' tails, ears, and chew on each others' snouts.

Pigs are very smart and pleasant animals. I feel guilty every time I eat a ham sandwich...

Temple Grandin is autistic and has a PhD, has done a lot of work in animal husbandry and as an animal advocate. She believes livestock should have a good life and adequate care so that, once they are slaughtered properly, the animals will not be stressed or in a state of fear because that affects the meat. Temple is not a vegetarian, but believes we can consume meat without being cruel to the animals during their lifetimes. Please read her books!
