If it's a cd-only player, it's probably built by Alpine. There is one model that has had a few laser failures, but overall for Chrysler, this is very rare. (GM cd players have a 100 percent failure rate).
CD / cassette combos are mostly built by Mitsubishi and are very high quality. Laser failures are unheard of. Try a laser cleaning disc first. If using a computer-generated disc, try a store-bought one. Computers write the table of contents in a slightly different place and most car cd players can't move far enough to read it, then will say "error".
If you have the newer rounded corner faceplate style radio, you could have a Chrysler-built cd player. These have a lot of problems but don't usually cost too much to fix.
