I also have banging pipes. Let me get this straight, there is this tank above the furnace
Connected to pipes, is this where I fill the water, and how do I know how much to fill in.
The tank looks like a gray propane tank but I know it has something to do with the water.
Do I bleed the base boards first and then fill with water? The system is an oil burner with one zone valve that is open.

Thanks, Willa

The gray tank if hooked to the boiler lines is an expansion Tank. That's NOT where you fill the system. There should be a pipe to the boiler with either a valve on it or a pressure regulator/Automatic fill.

Check boiler it should be around 8 to 12 lbs of pressure/

Check boiler pressure if its low slowly add some water to it or Adjust the pressure reg to it. Make sure the boiler is cooled down when adding water

Now bleed. Radiators are tough to bleed at times, Turn boiler on/call for heat, and start with the lowest radiator and work to the top and back down and up again. Be Patience it takes time to get all of the air out

Here's a site to help you become familiar with your heating system it should help you a lot
