I have a very large precast stone fireplace in my family room. I would like to mount a flat panel TV above the mantel, but am not sure of the best method, or whether the stone is strong enough to support the TV and mounting bracket. Total weight of the bracket and TV is approximately 140 lbs.
I'm assuming the best way to mount this would be to drill holes and use lag bolts with anchors, but I don't want to destroy my fireplace. Anyone have any suggestions or warnings before I try this?
Any feedback would be helpful.
Thanks!

Not only will the stone not hold your TV but most of the wall behind it is no good for TV mounting. You need to find the studs and that can be tricky since most stud finders will not work through stone. You could start drill very small pilot holes in the mortar lines that can be patched later. Once you stumble on a stud measure 16 " in each direction and you will have a pattern of the studs.
