View Full Version : How'd you come up with your screename?

nikosmom

Ok, there are a LOT of interesting screen names here on AMHD and I was wondering how you came up with yours. Some are pretty obvious but some are not. Without revealing anything too personal, share how you decided on your AMHD name... :)

KISS
Mar 5, 2009, 12:35 PM
Well there are two ways of doing something the KISS method and the SWAG method. The SWAG method is a Scientific Wild-A$$ed Guess.

Unfortunately, the simple method is sometimes harder to achieve. A simple, elegant design is really tough.

I've been labeled as a person to create a complex design and simple ones. The complex ones may not be complex at all, but rather easy to troubleshoot.

A simple example, but it costs more. Bear in mind that lives and property were at stake and the system worked in an emergency when the lab exploded.

In an upgrade, I had a fellow PHD Chemist not care whether the wiring looked good. This doesn't help troubleshooting one bit.

I had the same Chemist ask why I could not wire a low voltage light to another panel in another room. I said everything must communicate via contact closures. One panel created a contact closure for the other panel to use. Power for the lamp, then came from the other panel.
Surprisingly, that was not considered simple. The use of a contact closure cost at least 20 extra dollars.

Reliable, simple, elegant and safe are very difficult to integrate together.

I designed a mechanical magnetic electrical probe holder which went through many revisions from proof of concept to a finished in-house use product. Not including electrical, there were 11 parts and 3 tools that had to be made to make the part. It went through various revisions and became a robust product, sometimes hand manipulated 500x per day.

Depending on the application, the design changed somewhat. As failures occurred, fixes were put into place.

On one of the parts, the vendor changed how they manufactured the probe needles and they would not go back to the original method. Fortunately, there was an agreeable method. The problem I was unable to fix with the vendor was high temperature corrosion. They would not fix it on their end because of contamination of their bath, so I had to fix it on mine.

A very neat experience.

I have actually managed to hold on to this name as an alias since 1996. Been in the diesel-volkswagen game since 1993, if you don't include the fact my mom brought me home from the hospital after I was born, in a brand-spanking new 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit, diesel of course, and the same color of green as baby-food peas. I blame it on her, mostly. It's too easy not to.

My response was originally referrring to the part about the man-made god. Then I went back to read it again (because I thought it was "pure genius") and saw in the lighter shade of grey the other line. I actually laughed out loud. Pretty brilliant. :p

Ya know, I have that posted on some of my social networking.. and well, dating sites.. and the girls always seem to get a kick out of it... in fact, they LOVE it.

Unfortunately, the one girl that didn't find it very funny when she saw it was the girl that was, in fact, cut out of that pic hehe

Well it stemmed from bear (which is a nickname for me hear, lol the irony ) which came about after I was playing football (soccer to the people in the US)at school and the teacher at the started calling me bear, and then one kid added al in front after a cartoon character that had his own theme tune :D and it kind of stuck

It's Bellatrix Lestrange from 'Arry Potter.

Happy Birthday to your daughter, THIS!
Yes oh my goodness, this age is very trying! I have to count down from 10 so many days. My saving grace is that my child doesn't fight me on bed. He insists on being in bed by 7:15. So our only fight is me seeing if I can get him fed, bathed, and ready by his self-imposed deadline.

shazamataz
Apr 15, 2009, 10:18 AM
Wow, if only all kids actually wanted to go to bed! There would be a lot less manic mums out there lol

nikosmom
Apr 15, 2009, 10:54 AM
Yeah my kid is weird in that respect- he LOVES sleep. Sleeps 12-14 hours straight EVERY night. Plus a 3-4 hr during the day. I have no idea how one person sleeps so much but I don't fight him on it. Every night after bath and I put his pajamas on him, he runs, literally runs down the hall to his room and cheers when I get there after him to put him in his crib. If I don't meet him there fast enough, he comes looking for me.

Needless to say, he doesn't care that it's still light out, his little internal clock says bedtime is 7:15.

shazamataz
Apr 15, 2009, 11:23 AM
Hehe, that sounds really cute!
You are the envy of moms everywhere. My little brother is 6 (17 year age gap between him and me eep!) and he is lucky to sleep 8 hours and awakes mum and dad up at 2 every morning because there is 'something' in his room.

this8384
Apr 15, 2009, 11:53 AM
My little one is pretty good about bedtime, too. She usually says "NO!" when you tell her it's bedtime but once you get her teeth brushed and her pajamas on, she'll crawl into her own bed, say her prayers with you and lay right down :)

The hardest part of getting her used to the toddler bed was her rolling out. The first few nights she ended up underneath it; she only got out one night the first week, pounding on the door yelling "Mommy!" but got back in bed when she realized that wasn't working LOL

nikosmom
Apr 15, 2009, 12:06 PM
I haven't converted to the toddler bed yet because 1) he doesn't try to get out, lol and 2) I'm afraid he'll roll out.

Plus I'm worried that on Saturday mornings, he'll start getting out of bed earlier than I want him to!

this8384
Apr 15, 2009, 12:22 PM

Ok, I've thought for some time before posting, here's how I came to Unknown008:

The first time I was introduced to the internet, on my own, a friend of mine invited me to an online game. His pseudo was Unknown007, maybe after the famous James Bond Spy, the 007 agent.

I chose Unknown008 in that game. I've used that some places more, including here. Now that I thought about it, I've come up with some story of some sort:

First, everybody knows James Bond. But nobody knows the secret agent backing him up each time!! He is the 008 agent, working in the shadow of his 'colleague'. Each time you see 007 in a difficult situation, it is 008 that manages to make matters easier for 007. It's more difficult, for nobody must know about him, and he has to give all the fame to his 'colleague', but he is humble and does not need that fame.

The Oompa Loompa reminds me of my daughter when she has her picture taken, she makes that same face and head tilt...

From 2 - 5 years old, you could never take her picture without her throwing her head to the side... don't know where she got it but it was a photographers nightmare and took me forever to get her to stop.

The minute she saw the camera... right to the side her head went.

GAAAH!! I'm <3'ing the Oompa Loompa, nikosmom!!!! :D:D:D

Thanks THIS!

I had to finally change it because everyone was freaked out by my other avi. I was hoping the Oompa Loompa would appear a little friendlier. :p

My son doesn't yell anything when his pic is taken. He just looks like a deer caught in headlights. See us on the Members thread...

EDIT: we're on pages 95 & 97

I'm not even married yet and I always be telling my fiancé "let me tell u". My fiancé hate that phrase but I don't care because I still use it.

The funny part about is I say let me tell you then say what I got to say and go out of the room but goes back in the room with another "let me tell u". Guys deal with so must from us females but they got to take it. It for their own good.

I have wise people around me. One of them is my grandma and she is from down south and don't play. She gives advice just like she like her liquor--straight up.

Then I have my two best friends which are my mom and dad. Their advice is always dead on but my mother's is a less sugar coated then my dad's advice.

The rest I just learned from other people around me. I learned more from their mistakes than my own.

Actually my screen name was inspired by another website that I'm a member of, it's a funny news site that found the dumbest questions people have ever asked on this site and posted links to them.

While the stupidest questions were hilarious I really liked AMHD and joined.

I actually am tired of this screen name as I don't go back the site that originally inspired it much and will probably change it to my PSN ID (if I can figure out how)

What a sweet thing to say about your parents and granma. :D My Mom is the same way,she wouldn't know what sugar coating meant if you spelled it out.An old German woman is no one you want to mess with!
I lived in Florida for a few years and my one neighbor was a lady from Georgia. She used to crack me up with her advice.
Glad you didn't have to learn it all the hard way, there are smarter ways of learning.;)

Let's just say that I was only here to ask a question then leave, so I didn't think things through when choosing my username. Darn AMHD and it's addictiveness (is that a word?).

Old joke - man goes to Doctor and complains that he has fruit flies flying around his genitals.
