Yesterday, after completing 180 miles of a 200 mile interstate drive in my '72 Bonneville, I heard two loud pops and found black smoke billowing from behind. The car stopped running and coasted to the emergency lane. When AAA loaded it up, I noticed that both mufflers were split open like bags of microwave popcorn.
I have not been out in the newly-fallen snow to investigate, but I wonder if you guys have any clues as to what happened.
Thanks,
Jayson

A coil wire won't make your mufflers blow out or exsplode but a coil wire will make your car not run... if your car has a Cat Back exhaust on it, that's where your catilatic converters are behind your mufflers, then that could make your mufflers blow if the cat gets stopped up... Ive heard of peoples Cat Converters blow out from under the car from when they get old and stopped up they can turn cherry red and blow up basically, its possible that's what happened to your mufflers, but even then your car shouldn't stop running, or even if it does stop running it should fire up again... but with splits in the muffler it would be loud.
