I've been getting flashes of images in my mind that I find to be quite disturbing. In one I sep in front of a train. In another I get hit in the back with an axe... I can't see who swings it. I get other versions of that one where I am chopped in the back of the head or across the face. There are others involving being shot in the back of the head with a rifle or hit by a baseball bat. I never see who is doing it. In the vision I'm not afraid of what's happening like in a nightmare, but afterwards I do find it disturbing that such things are in my mind. These come to me at various moments, maybe 4 times a day or so. Each one lasts no more than a second or two. I'm not calling them up and it can happen when I am actively engaged in an activity. At first I thought it was in response to some chronic pain I was experiencing (not head pain), but I've since found some relief for the past 4 days or so but the images still come to me. I am not feeling despondent or without hope, even when the pain was bad. I certainly have no desire to die. Why would this be happening and is it something I need to take seriously?

I get "unbidden" images, too. I also get "unbidden" thoughts, which are called intrusive thoughts. In my case, it's a form of OCD. If you're not depressed, I'd say that might be what you have, too. I suggest you visit a counselor and describe what's going on with you. Only a professional will be able to truly diagnose what's going on. If it's troubling you, I would say it's serious enough to get some help. I hope you start feeling better soon!
