How does this work. Is there a set amount a garnishment can get each month or can they take everything deposited in the account each time there is a deposit?

A lot depends on who is garnishing your account and how much you owe them.

For something to get to the level where they are garnishing your bank account, you have been ignoring something for a while. You should have a good idea who is garnishing your account and why.

Is it a federal lien?
Is it related to child support?
Did you get behind on car payments?
Did you get behind on other retail credit accounts?

Each category has a different answer. Post more information so that you can get a better answer to your question.

I am not aware of any differences in the amount which can be seized - the whole account, part of the account - based on the type of Judgment, for example, car payments vs credit card and so forth.

What are you referrering to?

Certain retail creditors seize only what is available in the account at the time the garnishment is placed at the bank. They are limited to a one-time seizure each time they file and can take only what is there up to the limit of the debt. If there are more funds in the account than the balance of the debt, then the entire balance is not seized.

I am not aware of any lien filed against a bank account which lives forever - what specific creditors are allowed to file one lien and then just keep collecting until the Judgment is paid (and this may also be a difference in State laws).
