After the car runs for a couple minutes, the pipe coming off the manifold going to converter gets cherry red. Converter was taken off but still gets cherry red. Any ideas? Car has new plugs, plug wires, new computer, cap,and rotor. Thanks allen

Which engine is in your celeb?
And why all the replaced parts?
Was that to stop that pipe from glowing?
'82 is a very old emissions system, with some very rudimentary sensors.
Are you certain all the components are in place and functioning?
My guess is a fuel trim problem. These old systems didn't have the preferrable diagnostic code system that is available today.
Incorrect EGR can also divert hot exhaust gasses...
So many things could be wrong...
More testing and inspection is required.

It's a 2.5l 4 cyl. Computer got fried when the mechanic tried to get the fan to work so he fried it. The car sat since 2000 in my garage. Most sensers except o2 have been changed. New tank and fuel pump. Car was running rough so mechanic started to replace parts. Was running good before it left my place but battery died. So I couldn't keep it running. Do have the sent of gas in the oil. Would fuel injector also be bad?

"after the car runs for a couple minutes"
At idle or while driving?
When the converter was removed, what was put in it's place?
Does the exhaust note sound normal at the tail pipe?
What color is the outside of the exhaust manifold? (ashy-white, oily-black, or normal rusty?)
Does coolant temp seem to be running high or normal?
Does the engine rev-up through the rpm range or does it seem to bog down when you try to rev it?
Sorry if it seems I'm all questions, no answers, but there's a LOT of questions! There are a few potential problems I can think of, but may not apply if none of my above questions apply.

I don't even want to know how the computer got fried trying to run "the fan?"...
Thing's are getting scary here!
Try finding someone locally who can actually diagnose your car, if necc.
These symptoms may be quite normal.
After having sat for such an extended period, some rough run isn't uncommon, until the cylinders and valve train free up, and begin to function freely and properly.
Imagine laying up in your Barco-lounger for a week or two, then suddenly.. Jump up and go rotate your own tires!
That is quite a step!

Pipe gets red on idle not in drive. Car hasn't been driving. The converter was removed to see if it was plugged. Converter is back into place. The exhaust sounds normal but manifold is your standard rust in color. As far as temp, has idiot light so I really don't know temp. motor will bog down after 1st start. Computer was fried do to the fact they tried to get the van to run and used a jumper wire to get it to work that's when it went to crap from there.

Hmm. Was the engine test-run with the converter off? Or was it just inspected and deemed good and reinstalled? I still can't help but think there's exhaust restriction. May be converter, muffler, stopped tail pipe, or bent/damaged pipe somewhere in between. Has it been on a tow truck? If so check and make sure tail pipe didn't get bent or get a dirt plug in it. It's common for both.
The cooling fans run from a temp sending unit and from a/c controls. I could see hot-wiring the fans to test function of the motors, but It would help to know what the jumper wires were connected to. I'm drawing a blank on what could have been jumped that would have fried something on the computer or affected the fueling.
"gas smells like oil". Hmm. A bad injector 'could' be the culprit, pouring gas into a cyl instead of spraying, to prove/disprove that you can just pull the spark plugs and look for the really wet plug that reeks of gas. If this is the problem though you should have already noticed a definite miss, either constant or intermittent. If that is the case I could see raw fuel reaching the down pipe to be burned in the exhaust. You probably would have noticed some back-firing with this though, and the exhaust would definitely smell very strongly of raw gas.

The engine was ran without converter on. I put my hand by the pipe and it was blowing my hand back pretty goo.from converter back that is a new exhaust. Had it replaced after car was on flatbed. As far as the fan, they took a piece of wirre ran it from the positive on battery to the plug for the fan. Was done several times. Then the car was running like garbage after the last time. They did this while car was running. I did take out plugs and they were wet BAD. Never seen that before. They do stink of gas even the oil itself stinks when you pull dip stick out. I also do think they fried my fan because you have to unplug it and plug it back on the sensore in order for it to work. Bunch of knuckle heads that worked on this.

This is beginning to sound like the "bunch of knuckle heads" damaged the car's electronics by crossing the wrong wires, somewhere...
