Hello:

Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri has been held without charges in a Navy brig in South Carolina. President Obama is going to move the case of the only enemy combatant to be held on American soil, Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri, into a civilian criminal court. The Bush administration had argued that he could be held indefinitely without being charged.

Well, it appears that the dufus in chief CAN'T declare Americans to be enemy combatants and take away all their right - just because he said so...

For those of us who support the Constitution, that's good news. For those of you who only like the Second Amendment, that's OK. Obama is going to look out for YOU too.

Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri is a citizen of Qatar .
Since he was captured on American soil ;plotting terrorism against America ,and not captured on the battle field... he has more of a case for habeas protection than those held at GITMO or Bagram.

First of all Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri is a citizen of Qatar, he's not an American that was delcared an enemy combatant and had his rights taken away. And it wasn't just Bush that said he could be held indefinitely without charges, the Fourth Circuit said so, and SCOTUS agreed to hear the case. So it WAS working it's way through the system. I guess Obama has decided he can overrule the system also.

But as for him looking out for our 2nd amendment rights, is this what you mean?

Interesting that he would make this call rather then letting SCOTUS make a decision. After seven years, the US courts have been unable to clearly answer this question (if there is any doubt, read the Fourth Circuit opinions).

Perhaps Obama wants the issue unsettled in the event he needs to apply enemy combattant status on terrorists captured on US soil?? Could be

Or perhaps he's just tossing the nutroots another bone after expanding renditions and following Bush policy at Bagram?

This may be somewhat off the subject but I believe it has constitutional aspects, Obama is considering overturning the 'conscience rule' on abortions (http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-na-conscience27-2009feb27,0,4299014.story?track=rss).

I wonder if there will be an exception for Muslim healthcare workers.
