There are many cases of people being wrongfully accused and convicted of serious crimes that they didn't commit. What can be done to prevent wrongful convictions? I have heard that is someone is falsely accused, they should never talk to police without a lawyer, don't take a polygraph and don't consent to a search without a warrant. Does anyone have any other useful advice on what to do if falsely accused of a crime?

All you can do is immediately retain a GOOD Attorney who specializes and if you have an alibi for the date/time, get statements from witnesses as quickly as you can before their memories fade.

Thanks for the advice Judy, what should you do if you are innocent but have no alibi? Police don't care if you are innocent or not, they will frame anyone just to solve a case. P.S. I'm speaking hypothetically.

No, police want to get the right person, but if you seem to be the right person.
But in the end, no statement, don't keep trying to tell them why you are not guilty, they will mix you up, or lie to you even to get some fact out.
They can't use polygraph in criminal cases unless the defense tries and gets it in, they are not considered valid in criminal cases normally

What can be done to prevent wrongful convictions? Hello earl:
Repeal mandatory sentencing. Outlaw plea bargaining. Make jury duty mandatory. Allow jury nullification. Strengthen the exclusionary rule. Repeal no knock statutes. Make civics in high school mandatory. No children tried as adults.
I'm sure there's more...

I don't know. The Police have never tried to frame me for anything just to solve a case - hypothetically or not.
