Hi ,

I am a Canadian (F1 Visa) working as a full time intern for my CPT. I am entitled to a $200 reimbursement for my transportation expenses each month. I have recently received my first pay check and there is a deduction for federal withholding tax, medicare employee tax, and MA-Withholding Tax (the state tax). I'm wondering if I can get refund for that at all since I don't earn much already.

Thank you for the help:)

On F1/CPT you are exempt from residency for 5 years. Your income is not subject to SS tax and Medicare tax. Tell your employer to refund you these taxes.

Thank you. Then, What about the MA Withholding and Federal Withholding tax? Am I able to get a refund on that? What do I have to do?

You will pay state tax in the state where you are working.

Hi, now I have another question. Recently I 'm being rehired with the same company whom I did my CPT with, to continue for OPT. I'm wondering for OPT, which taxes can I avoid? Or ask the employer to not deduct from my check?

My salary will be around $26000 to 28000
Thank you.

While on OPT, you are still considered to e a student, so, by law, you are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes.
