I've been at my current job for several months now and there are several things that alarm me about the way the owner runs the business. First and foremost is this: my employer is taking withholdings for FICA, state, and federal taxes. I am the one who is first line for answering phones (then it's his son, then the accountant, small office!). There have been several calls from some guy with the IL dept. of revenue. Other employees (field laborers) keep complaining that their payroll checks are bouncing. Now I heard from some that they got their yearly SSA statement, they only worked at this employer for the entire year, and $0 was shown for contributions for the past year.

I assume that if the employer is taking the withholdings from our checks, then he is responsible for paying that to the appropriate government departments. How do I report that I don't think my employer is doing that and whom to I report it to? Any advice is appreciated!

I would get away from that employer as fast as you can. I found this on the State of IL website.
