Once a month, I report in to the kiosk machine at the probation office. After doing so for 2years, I went in and found at that my file was no longer in the kiosk system. I left a note to my probation officer because he wasn't there for me to see him that day. A few days later he calls and tell me that I do not have to report into probation anymore and only have to come in if he calls or send me a letter. Do I need that in a written statement from him to have on file or is it fine if my probation officer calls me and tell me himself?

You ARE smart, aren't you?? Apparently you KNOW that if something gets misplaced, YOU'LL be the one in trouble..
Yes, you need something in writing... But, they're not going to write you a letter. They're too busy stuffing their faces with doughnuts..
So, YOU write a letter to him confirming the telephone conversation you had with him. Keep a copy, of course.

Agreed, what if in 6 months a new PO is in that office and sees you have not reported, after they come hand cuff you and you are sitting in jail waiting for a hearing, is not the time to wish you had it in writing.
They had to have a form that changed your status, merely ask for a copy.
