I believe my son is suffering from a mental illness, he assaulted me on Thursday night. I received serious head injuries and required treatment. He needs help. How can I get help for him without having to report this incident to the police.

Will he commit hisself to a facility.
You will need to talk with an attorney for the rules of your area to commit against their will if he will not.

Hi, SHILPA... you could both go and see your Doctor sit down and explain the symptoms that he is suffering from and ask for his opinion.

Doctors are restricted by a code of ethics which prevents them from repeating any of their patients conditions outside of the consulting room... if you have not made a criminal charge against your son, then a Doctor cannot even be ordered by law as there is no crime to answer too... you will be in his surgery purely to ask for his advise on the matter.

If your son will not agree to come with you, maybe you could go on your own explain your situation and your sons symptoms, stating that you have no wish to make a charge against your son, but that it's obvious that he is in need of some medical help, asking in his opinion, what would he advize you to do.

You haven't given many details... ie.. was he drinking, is he on medication, what actually lead up to this attack, is this a regular occurrence, etc.etc.

If you are in any way, in fear for your safety, then you must ask for immediate help, not only for yourself but also for your sons welfare, what ever way you decide.

Please do not gloss over the issue but speak to your Doctor as soon as possible.
