I will soon be adding an addition to my home. We will effectively be enclosing a "dog ear" in the current house's footprint, squaring it off with the rest of the home. The house is constructed from solid brick (8" thick, but the addition will be constructed with wood studs and covered in Hardie Panel (Hardie's vertical siding. I am attaching a photo of the site for further clarification.

My question is, how do I handle the vertical seam between the addition, hardie plank, and the original home, brick. Clearly I cannot just but the Hardie Panel up to the brick as water could easily enter, but would flashing work in the application?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

Have you checked out what you want to do to your home with the Building Dept to see if you are allowed to do this? You will also need a permit and have the final project inspected as well.

Twinkie-

Thank you for raising the issue of the permit. Yes, I will get permits for all the work done and yes, it is permitted by the city.

That said, the question remains unanswered, how do I go about preventing water intrusion along the vertical seam?

Thanks!
