Are you in a State which will open the adoption papers if you show an extreme medical necessity?

1. Your mother is now 60 years old, if still alive. She may not have told any other family or friends about you. Your contact may have dire consequences on her life and health.

2. You can contact the courthouse in the county where the adoption took place, and the one where the birth took place, and ask to have your information stored in case she looks for you.

3. You can do the same thing with the adoption agency. Both places may already have information for you waiting from her--but not necessarily.

4. If this is a serious medical condition and you NEED the genetic medical information for treatment, you may be able to qualify for some sort of state aid for your court costs. Have you contacted your local social services department to ask?

5. There are tons of websites out there that have reunion pages, such as adoption.com, adoption.org, and ISSR. If she is looking for you, your registration on such sites may facilitate a reunion.

On much older closed adoptions, the odds of getting the adoption opened are slim, and are almost always ONLY for medical information.

The odds of getting that information for free are even slimmer.

Adoption is big business, and they not only make money off the original costs, but off the later costs of facilitating reunions. Do you really think they'll hand out information that people desperately want for free, when they can charge for it? I would, on top of the other things I have listed, contact your Congressman and Senator. Tell them about the need for adoptees to have access to their vital information. Adoption law will never change if the people involved never lobby to get it changed.
