I live in a complex that is doing numerous upgrades to all units that are empty for new tenants. I have lived in my unit for almost 2 years and I live in a downgraded apartment. I want to get new carpet and I heard that I have the right to demand upgrades, including carpet. Is this true? And if so where can I find the information to show the managers so I can get the upgrades I want?

If I remember correctly, you can request ANYTHING for your space, the rent might jump up to more than you can afford and the owner will have a nice(newer) carpet in the 'next' vacant unit!

Apartment owners don't just install a degradable item(like carpet) unless there is a good reason for it,that's just throwing money out the door, the owners are in the business to make money, not keep people in comfort.

Only thing I could suggest is OPEN COMMUNICATION with the owners/maintenance/etc.Perhaps an agreement can be reached as to how much more rent would be,what you can afford, and you have to sell yourself to them as a responsible renter, all these and maybe more!

Good Luck!

The only rights you have are spelled out in the wording of your lease. I am not certain what you meant when you said your place was downfgraded, can you explain so I can help you further?
