Government clearance? Possibly - depending on what you are working with. Financial problems are one thing 'spys' target.

Possibly, your finances is definitely an area that will be considered. As Steve mentioned, financial problems raise the concern that you could be bought.
The way to deal with it is to be very open about everything as you fill out the questionnaire and also in your interview. If you raise the issue and explain what you are doing to resolve your financial problems, it is less likely to disqualify you.

Who would be your employer and what type of work would you be doing?

Your finances are looked at when applying for a security clearance. Like walk17 said, make sure that you tell the truth and don't lie because if you lie they will deffinantly deny you your clearance. I was afraid that I wasn't going to get my clearance because of my credit and I explained it to them and what I was doing to resolve it and I got mine. But, I never filed for bankruptcy. So, I am not sure in your case. Just make sure you don't lie about anything because they will find out. Be honest with the investigator when they are interviewing you. Good luck.
