The company I work for has decided to relocate some people. Two guys are being moved into the same office, and there was only one phone line. Our "Cracker Jack" maintenance decided to get a two line wall plate and have the two lines come to that box. So far no problem. The issue is that instead of just using the existing line and jack since that phone was working, and installing another jack, they cut the old jack and installed two new jacks.

Now the old line does not work. The phone message light blinks, but when the receiver is picked up, I get nothing.

The specifics of my system...

The phones we have only require two wires for operation. The wire being used is 6 wire, and the jacks are 6 wire. They have each wire attached to the corresponding color on the jack.

I am the IT Manager, who has never had any training or very much experience with wiring phones. I have done network wiring, but with that you have 8 wires, you use 8 wires. HA! HA!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Clarify something please - are they trying to connect the two phone lines through one 6-wire cable, with the leads split across the 2 jacks? Or are there two 6-wire cables, one for each jack? Also, what are the colors of the wires in the cable?

You will need to connect a pair to the red and green on one jack, and the second number connects to the red and green on second jack.

Thanks for your help, I have verified that both jacks are wired using the green and the reds.

To answer your question, There is two 6 wire cables.

I found someone that had a wire tester, and it shows that they are not crosswired and there is continuity.

I guess now my problem may be in the software / system that we are using. AVAYA IP OFFICE. I'm pretty good at administration of the software, but AVAYA is not very good at giving much information in their manuals and online files.

Thanks for your help guys!

If these are IP phones, you may indeed require 4 wires same as computers.

Avaya is an excellent system, click on this link, select your version of release, then download or view the manual:
Avaya (http://support.avaya.com/japple/css/japple?PAGE=ProductArea&temp.productID=129487&temp.releaseID=343839&temp.bucketID=160259)
Good Luck.
Test the jacks with a known good phone, not an Avaya Station phone, a phone from home.
