I'm a retired auto worker. I took the early out after 28 yrs. Ford paid me 85% of my pay until I got to my 30 yr. mark. I moved to Nevada right after my early retirment. Out here H&R block is telling me that I shoud not be paying Michigan State tax as I am a Nevada resident. The union checked with the company and they said that I should be paying Michigan Taxes. If I should not be paying Michigan taxes should'nt I get back all the money that I have paid in. Just want to do the right thing. Thanks for your time.

If you are not resident of Michigan and were not present in Michigan to earn the income, it is not subject to Michigan taxes.

If you are present in a state, then any income earned during this period, must be reported to the state.

To your resident state, you must report your worldwide income for the year. Nevada does not have state tax so you do not file.

Agreed.

Once you established residency in Nevada, you became a Nevada resident and Michigan LOST any legal standing to tax your income.

You will owe taxes to Michigan for the period you were a part-year resident in both Nevada and Michigan, but after that, you owe Michigan NOTHING!
