Hi,

I am a Graduate student currently on my OPT. I am planning to register for self employment. Which is legal as per the following link:
ICE Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS): Contact Information (http://www.ice.gov/sevis/updates_postcompletion_opt.htm#_Toc174419572)
But I do not have any information as to how should I go about the firm registration and other formalities. I would be grateful if someone can provide me details about the same.

Thanks

It depends on what type of entity you want to have as your employment vehicle. You can be a sole proprietor, partnership, corporation, LLC. You have lots of choices. Generally, the two considerations affecting your choice are (1) taxation and (2) liability. See an experienced attorney to advise you as to which is best for you. Please note that your OPT should be in the field in which you got your degree as that is what it was designed for, and to give you a lead to a petitioner for an H-1B. Hope this helps. Good luck.
