Hi. I am new on this site so I want to thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

I am putting a bid on a new home and when I went downstairs to look at the basement, I noticed that the floor joices had huge holes in them where the wires to the home were threaded through. The holes were close to the size of a basketball!

Can anyone tell me how much those holes have affected the integrity of the floors above it?

Thank you so much!

I think we need you to get more precise in you estimate of those holes. A basketball is nearly exactly the size of a joist. Here is a thought, was the home inspected bythe local building department and did it pass inspection? Ask the inspector what he thought. There are guidelines for size and location of holes but we need a betterdesription before I go any further.

The holes are 9 inches in diameter and the wiring is threaded through them. The holes are about 15 inches apart. The home was built in 1995. We are guessing that they may have re-wired and either a contractor or the homeowner himself did the re-wiring. The home is a repossesion which leads us to believe that there were a few "homemade" jobs done around the house.

If the hole is 9" how large is the joist? This does not sound good so far
