I have a cable modem connected to DLink router then to my Dell Dimension 2100 PC. Lately it appears that if my PC is idle for 15 to 20 minutes I will lose my internet connection. I usually unplug my cable modem and reconnect after 10 seconds. This procedure will normally allow me to establish my internet connection. My question is is my cable modem failing or my router ? Is there some troubleshooting I can perform ? My ISP provider, also modem provider, says the modem is OK I would like a second opinion.

Has this happened only recently with no changes to modem, router or PC? I believe some ISP's disconnect idle users after some period of inactivity - it might be worth asking that question if you haven't already.

One other thing to check is the power management for your network card: right click "my computer" and select "properties". Click the "hardware" tab and press the "device manager" button. Go to the "network adapters" section and go to the properties section for your network card (right click & properties).

Now select the "power management" tab and uncheck the option that says "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Let us know how you get on!

First, what are the symptoms of your losing your Internet connection? What exactly happens? Have you tried pinging an Internet site? Tried pinging the router? Have you tried calling your cable company? If its cable, its unlikely to be disconnecting. Cable is supposed to be always on. They can tell if the cable modem is responding.

I would suspect the power saver as Stu mentioned. It could also be some security setting or a problem with the router.
