If I received a previous quote from a contractor, and he has come back after the work and has now said the price is more than doubled what he quoted me, am I required to pay it? The work has already been done and I only agreed to an $800 increase which he told me before the work was done. Is there any law to protect us from paying the full amount since he never told us until after the work was completed?

Hi, mjcs!

It sounds to me like the contractor doesn't really know what he's doing concerning making quotes, sticking to an agreed amount and also working to maintain excellent customer satisfaction.

Was there a signed contract with the contractor that spelled out costs and an agreed upon payment schedule.

As far as the law is concerned, where is the approximate location where this is happening, please? Laws and recourses will vary, depending on the location.

Thanks!

There was no signed contract and the area is east of Toronto, Ontario Canada.

You can try to fight it in court, with witnesses of the quote,

A quote needed to be in writing and you needed a written contract before work started, plus a written change for any additional work done.

This is common fraud done by many contractors, and unless you can prove in court he has a history of this ( prior work he did) or have proof of this quote you have little defense

What should I charge a home owner for installing 3 4x8 sheets of FRC(fiberglass reinforced covering).
