- Where are you located?
- Do you have a generator? If so how big?
We need more detail. What you are asking is like "I want to buy a car. Which one do I buy?".

"Generally" there is a transfer switch that is wired to both the generator and the utility supply. It's basically a double pole, double throw switch. One position sends the generator power to the panel, and the other position sends the utility power to the panel. Some have a disconnect position which allows you to kill the power to the panel from either source, and others, both manual and automatic are "either / or"... without a disconnect position.

Now, please answer the questions you were asked if you want help in installing the generator.

Thank you Ballen for the logical comment.
J Bees, you need to realize, if you post a question with absolutely no specific information you are going to get questions as to what the heck it is you want to know.
If you were an accountant, and I asked you simply "How do I do my taxes?", with no other information, you'd have no idea what to tell me. You'd have all sorts of questions just so you could answer mine.
YOU now come here and ask for "instructions" on how to do something just as vague. Then you get mad at me for asking for more detail??
Get a clue about how these boards work first, then you can leave me a negative comment.
