Looking for black and white movie about a woman whose wealthy fiancé hires a detective to check her background before marrying her. The detective goes all the way back to her unhappy childhood, finds out she was a prostitute and had quit, but went back to that lifestyle to help a fellow working girl who was in an accident. Her friend recovers and marries a banker who doesn't know about her past. The principle character works hard to educate herself and becomes an author. The detective falls in love with her as her story unfolds to him and he spends time with her. I think it was set partially in Los Angeles and Mexico (the character ends up in a church there and is aided by the priest). I thought the title was the principal characters name beginning with an "S", but have had no luck in my quest yet. Thank you
