i would have but i already replaced the entire unit, inne to know what caused it.

Dirty air filters
Dirty evaporator coils.
Short cycling.
Defective motor capacitor.
Improper voltage
Imposed load larger that the motor is designed for.

The above items cause the motor to be stressed and over time lead to premature failure.

When they took out the motor, it was hot as could be. The HVAC people said they could not find a replacement, when it happened it smelled like burnning metal and a damp smell coming out of the return vent. Where was the smells coming from?

The motor winding burnt that is the smell of askril/varnish on the motor windings you smelled. Motors are always available so I guess they lied to you.

They said that it would be better to replace it,they said it would be better to replace the entire unit, a 4 ton goodman packaged unit, so I had it changed over to a packaged unit.
What was the damp smell? Thanks! Mower_Man. Reply soon!

That I have no idea of. It could have been moisture in the duct from condensation.

At 13 you should not be making those kinds of decisions. I always tell people when they are spending there money to let there wallet be there guide. If you have the money get a new unit and if not get a new motor.
