I am writing a research article and would like help in answering the following 3 part question:
What are the top 10 potential problems with a new dishwasher, the corresponding cause(s) of the problem and estimated cost to repair?

If there are 10 problems with a new dishwasher it is time to buy a different brand.
New dishwashers have very few problems and since they are new they are covered under warranty so no cost to repair.
You need to recheck your research article wording since there will not be much to report. I have been playing with dishwashers for 40 years and never had a bad new one out of the box.

Thank you for the redirection. What I should have asked is:
What are the 10 most common problems with a dishwasher once the manufacturer's warranty expires. What would be the estimated diagnosis and repair cost for these problems, regardless of make or model?

Repair costs including parts and labor
Motor and pump assemblys = 250.00 to 300.00
Water inlet fill valve = 125.00 to 175.00
Door interlock and safety switch= 100.00 to 150.00
Timer mechanical/electrical= 125.00 to 150.00
Selector switch(s)= 120.00 to 130.00 these are used with mechanical timers
Timer digital/electric= 175.00 to 250.00 this usually includes touch pad selector/options.
Replace rusted dish holder racks no labor allowance/slip in and out customer changes.
Lower 75.00
Upper 75.00
Plugged/clogged soft food strainer Wash ability complaint.Usually upper rack not cleaning correctly. Clean and service call= 100.00
Plugged/clogged dishwasher drain line. Clear line= 100.00
Replace leaking drain line= 125.00
When you can buy a rather cheap dishwasher on sale for 300.00 and installed for 75.00 it does not pay to fix one most of the time.
There could be other items that happen but the above items are usually what go bad.
