I have a 40-channel 900 MDz GE phone. When I puchased a new battery for it the salesman said that after the battery receives its full charge I should leave it off the handset until the next time it needs charging. I have never heard of this before and have never done it. Is his information correct? He claims that hanging the phone up every time I use it wears out the battery faster.

Ni-Cad batteries suffer from what's called the memory effect. They really like to be used until they are depleated and charged again.

It is a good idea to charge. Discharge completely and charge again periodically and when the batteries are new.

Li-Ion batteries, like used in Laptops have a battery "Gas gage" so to speak bulit into the battery pack. In order to reset the pack you can boot Windows in safe mode. Let the battery drain until the laptop shuts off on it's own and then charge completely. Again, you should do this with a new battery pack.

Li-ION batteries like to be topped off.
