View Full Version : PVC vs ABS piping

I am trying to change a room into a laundry room. I have run the copper piping for the supply lines. While demolishing the wall, trying to find where to connect the 2" pvc drain line, I came across 2" plastic tubing for the vent to the kitchen sink. The wall thickness is the same as the pvc ( about 5/32"). Is this OK to just glue together with the pvc?
Thanks
Kevin

What color is this plastic tubing? If it is black ABS plastic then you cannot just join onto it as it is a dissimilar plastic and requires its own special cement.

Otherwise, you can connect into the 2" ABS pipe using an appropriate transition clamp...see picture. This is a shielded clamp that will transition betwenn plastics nicely.

You can cut in BELOW where the sink connects into the pipe, run your 2" pvc pipe and trap and connect the VENT for the washing machine into the kitchen sink vent at about 48" off the finish floor. Basically, as drawn below.. :)

Let me know if all makes sense or if I misunderstood the question.

Or, you can go to Home Depot and purchase ABS-to-PVC glue for about $3.00.

Milo... that is not correct. The glue you refer to is a ALL-purpose cement (see picture) BUT it is meant to be used to cement PVC to PVC and ABS to ABS, but it cannot be used to cement ABS to PVC. I am sure of this as I have talked to OATEY chemists and they made these facts clear. They explained that the plastics expand/contract at different rates and are NOT compatible to be joined together.

How about this...

They do make a transition cement for use between ABS and PVC (see picture) but according to the chemist it can only be used to cement one joint and it is only to be used UNDERGROUND when connecting trailer park bathrooms up. In other words, the chemist told me that you cannot use this inside a home... only underground!

Check it out and see if they tell you the same thing... will you... :)

Mark, I do not talk about "All Purpose Cement". I will look at, and read the fine print on the can Monday. I'll let you know then...

In any case, it will work well for his vent connection...
