Does anyone know the title of a book with slightly religious undertones about a girl who goes in to be a science experiment test subject and is put in a alternate world where she is told if she follows a white path and the rules in a book then she can get through the "game" or something like that. If she goes off the path then the monsters can get her. She runs into some other people stuck in this world with her when she tries to follow the path but gets confused and follows a slightly yellow one. They teach her how to build a weapon to shoot the monsters. The book is complicated and confusing so no one pays attention to it. But finally she understands the book and finds a way to progress to a city. I think there is like some bubble transporter on the white path until a rest place along the way. Then she gets through to another level of the alternate reality with her friends. They train in some kind of school or training center. Then they try to get up this mountain but all her friends have been infected somehow (maybe bit or electricity I don't quite remember) and they are half some kind of evil thing the guy that she is with actually has this but he has been resisting his urges. Eventually she gets out and barely remembers what happened but the other girl she went with didn't have the same experience. Oh you and the aliens who were in charge of the experiment talk to her. Then she runs into the guy she met in the alternate place. The title was just The ______ two words... it's seriously driving me crazy that I don't remember.

Are you sure you are not describing a book by Phillip Pullman called The Golden Compass? It sounds exactly like your description except the book is a compass. There are two other books in the series. 'The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass."
