My baby is 6 days old and I noticed 2 days ago that SHE has a red discharge in her diaper when she pees, which kind of looks like blood. I called my pediatrition to ask him about this and he said sometimes this happens but if she continued or had a fever to take her to urgent care. I am a little freaked out about this. Has someone gone through this before or does someone hae some advice as to what I should do, and know if this is normal? I don't have my next follow up appt for her until this Wendesday!

I don't have any personal experience with this but I can understand your concern. However, I would listen to your Pediatrition, he/she will know what they are talking about.

My daughter actually had a tiny amount of red discharge in her pee as well when she was young. It wasn't much and didn't last long at all. Everything was fine.

If you feel like it's more then a small amount and your "mom-radar" is going off then go in to see your doctor or try calling your local health nurse.. they are usually really great.

Mostly likely it is one of two things: Some newborn girls will have some discharge due to hormones from their mother's system. It may be blood tinged and is perfectly normal. It may also be crystals that can sometimes form in the urine as babies system is regulating... which can be a sign she is not getting enough fluid intake or not urinating enough. We see this sometimes especially in breastfed babies if the mother's milk has not transitioned to mature milk within a few days or if there is a concern about baby's intake.

Both are normal occurrences. If it is from urate crystals it should be short lived. If it continues, or if anything new goes on, check back with your doctor. If it looks more as part of a discharge and not associated with baby's urine, you may notice it once in awhile for a while longer.

To add to what Doula said, I teach my mothers of baby girls that they may notice some red discharge that looks similar to the beginning of a period for the first two weeks of the baby's life.

This occurs because of the rapid withdrawal of the mother's hormones from the baby's system after delivery and is perfectly normal.

I will also state that it is your pediatrician who will give you the proper diagnosis and treatment, if necessary, for this.
