View Full Version : Shower drain leak or something worse?

Have recently discovered a leak that is causing a water spot on the ceiling of the first floor. The leak is directly below the shower drain. I believe it is the drain but in checking my shower upstairs (its a fiberglass one piece shower stall) the floor seems pretty solid except against the inside wall.

Stepping there and putting pressure it almost feels "squishy" (slight give) and I swear I hear water but can't be sure. I don't know if this is being caused by water under the shower OR if it's the drain seal being 'moved or broken'. I am trying to determine if it would just be worth the effort to replace the shower with a better quality one instead of the drain because I am concerned that the problem would just show its ugly head again.

So what do I do??
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Can you get under the shower base to bed the soft spot and to loosen the drain so you can install a new seal, either of plumbers putty or silicon jel, as the old drain seal sounds like it's ruptured? Let me know. Tom

I can get in from below - which means cutting a hole in my ceiling. We are having a plumber come out tomorrow to take a look at it and depending on what his estimate is will be the deciding factor of grabbing a saw and doing it myself.

I lack any skills in home improvement and fear greatly that which I may screw up beyond repair!

Thanks for the ideas though...
