I have possession of a vehicle in California that I need to sell. I am the legal owner, and the registered owner told me I can sell the vehicle on his behalf. He is currentlly in county jail and needs the money to make bail. He can't sign the transfer papers... this is my problem... any help, thanks

If you are really the "legal" owner, you name is on the title, and all you have to do is sign the title over to a buyer.
If your name is not on the title, you are not the "legal" owner, you may have some claim, but only the person listed on the title is the owner.
And of course he can sign the paper in jail. You go to the chief jailor and they bring him up to the office, he signs it and there is a notory on staff
They do legal paper work in jail all the time

Also keep in mind that when selling a vehicle in Calif the seller is responsible for any smog control issues and is suppose to have it certified with the state prior to the sale. Keep in mind some counties may not have this requirement but in most they have a smog program that is mandatory.
