I really need help. I am an anime fan and I can't view .avi files. I have downloaded every codec known to man but all in vain. I have tried K-lite codec pack which appers to be quite comprehensive but still nothing, I tried avi codec from free-codecs... nothing, I even tried the cccp codec which is especially for anime but still nothing. All I see is lines and colours which look like my system has suffered a hit from a magnetic pulse. What in the world do I do?

Tried it -- it still doesn't work. I've tried vlc. I have no bloody idea what is wrong.

Is this for all avi files or just a couple

Where you able to view avi files before

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup.

Its for all of them mate, I was able to view them before but I got a virus which led me to format the computer. After that I haven't been able to view them. There have been no hardware changes at all. Besides that I installed Kaspersky's antivirus, cc cleaner and ad-aware, but that was more to keep things safe to prevent more viruses.

I would attempt to uninstall All codec packs that you may have installed and then just install a fresh download of k-lite to see if something just got corrupt

Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 4.5.3 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 4.5.3 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 4.5.3 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm)

I did this yesterday night, I had the same theory, but still nothing. Is there something called a video driver? Do you reckon during the format that could have been removed, because that happened for the sound but all I had to do was download the driver.

All right I gave them both a shot and it still isn't working. What I did was first uninstalled the K-lite mega pack and tried them, no result. I tried doing the cccp codec pack but that isn't working. I have a theory, can this be linked to my video card. My computer was given to me so I don't really know what my video card cpabilities are, and since the format I may have removed the driver if there is one. Could that be the issue.

Do you have any other files that can be viewed in a media player
(wmv, mkv, mp4 etc.. )

If you do, see if you can play another format besides avi

Also, if you have a dvd movie, see if you can play that

To view dvd's in WMP, you need a dvd decoder

NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder
Free-Codecs.com :: Download nVIDIA PureVideo Decoder 1.02-223 : The nVIDIA PureVideo Decoder combines DVD and MPEG-2 playback (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/nvidia_purevideo_decoder.htm)

So see if you can view any other types of movie files

Also in the link above for divx codecs, there was also a DIVX player in that download, see if the avi file can be viewed in the divx player

Yes I can view the other files all right, I don't have any wmvs but I do have a few mp4s, rmvbs and flv. No problems there. I'll give the upper suggestion a shot and se what happens. Cheers

Ok sorry about the long comm gap, but I tried the Nvidia thing and well I think I downloaded the wrong version because they asked for verification of purchase. Anyway I tried the DivX player again and it worked somewhat, now I see the actual picture but it runs slowly as though its showing me the episode frame by frame.

Really don't know, you have tried vlc, wmp, divx player and still getting bogged down

At this point I would give ccleaner a try to see if it would help at all

-Uninstall ALL codecs that may have been installed and then run ccleaner (registry cleaner/optimizer) and then install the k-lite full package again and start with VLC

ccleaner (Freeware)
Download CCleaner 2.16.830 - FileHippo.com (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)
On the right hand side, click download latest version
