I was at an art show in San Francisco a few years back and after a few too many beers I purchased a painting for $5000. It was a "spur of the moment" decision and the most expensive drink that I ever had in my life. The artist has creds and seems to be prevalent in the artworld. I live and work in NYC. How do I sell this piece? Any suggestions are appreciated

Yes, if it's that valuable, you could probably approach a gallery who would be willing to sell it on consignment. You might also approach public libraries that display art, with some works being sold on consignment and there might even be some high quality restaurants that display works of are that are being sold on consignment.

There are also many free ways to advertise things on the Internet. Listed below are some of the best sites.

If you do a search for how much similar works by that artist are selling for currently, then it could give you an idea as to how you might price yours.

Another way to find out possible prices would be to pay a professional at an art gallery or someone at an auction how's that has somewhat of a specialty in evaluating and pricing art.

Here is the list of free advertising websites that seem to get the best exposure when people are doing searches for what they want on the Internet. Some of them are even international as far as where the ads reach, in case there is someone who might read what I have posted who wants to advertise on an international level. There are sites that don't get good exposure and, I don't use them. A person would have to be a member of and frequent those particular sites in order to know what is listed on them. I even post on sites that are located in other countries because the exposure is so good!

I can't help you with selling the painting, but I just had to recount a little story that your situation brought to mind. Something similar happened to my dad years ago. He had a little too much to drink one night. Not long after, an artist arrived at his front door holding a huge painting of safari animals in a bunch. Apparently in his drunken state, my father had promised to buy the painting if the artist would insert a unicorn into the group. Well, there was the unicorn. My dad purchased the painting. I don't think anyone likes the painting very much, but the story is so good that it has stayed in our family.
