Is it possible to convert a double garage sized shed into a flat with its own bathroom?

When I was a teen in Pennsylvania the rental house we lived in had a double car garage attached to the house. The landlord took this large garage and made it into another apartment, complete with a small kitchen and bathroom. He did have this done by professionals though. The roof was good and it was on a concrete slab. Just be sure you comply with any local building permits and building codes and have this inspected properly and you should be good to go.

If the structure is not that old you should be able to do this with a lot of money. Have fun!

Thanks, twinks. It's good knowing it can be done. And yep, I'd have to look into it further beforehand before deciding on anything like that, including the need to check with the local council on building permits etc. I'm sure it would be fun to put together..

Possible yes, feasibile maybe not. You need gas/oil for heat, electricity and sewer and most of all a building permit. Start with your building department since they are the ones who could shut you down after spending a ton of money. I know it can be done, has been done but you need to find out about your local requirements.

This is what I found out from our local council:

Installing a bathroom in the shed doesn't require any notification to council, so I could go ahead with that at any time.

Only when installing cooking facilities does it become a dual occupancy dwelling that amongst a lot of rules and fees, requires providing two extra car spaces that I couldn't possibly do. So that is out of the question.

If I were to add a shower to the shed, it could then be used as a bedsit and would be a much cheaper option than adding another bedroom and bathroom to the home.

As I only want to know what options are possible house-wise and what that might involve and cost, this has been helpful information.
