Our AC suddenly stops working. It's fan inside runs continuously, but the outdoor unit (compressor/fan) stops running. We tried switching on/off the circuit breaker, changing the air filter, yet nothing works. We were told that it can be some pressure buildup on the compressor, and there is supposed to be red color switch or reset button at the outdoor unit, which will reset the compressor pressure back to normal. However I found nothing when I open the panel on the outdoor unit, there is just a bunch of connectors and wiring. There is also a copper coil and a spring in the middle. It doesn't look like a button at all, when I press it, it just bounce back, and there is no clicking sound. Is this really the reset button, or it is locate somewhere else. Anyway, I heard that getting a repair service is very expensive during the hot days (100 degrees), and I would try to exhaust all my own ways before calling for a repair service. Please help and thanks!

Coil with a spring on it sounds like the contactor that turns on the high voltage, if nothing happens when you depress the plunger then there is probably no power to the unit, also the thermostat should energize this device, IE"turn it on". Check the low voltage wires to the outdoor unit and
And with an electrical meter, check for proper voltages

Look on the electrical schematic for clues to witch wires and or terminals to test,

Without actually being there I can't give any additional recommendations

On the outside where the condenser unit is, there should be a electrical box. Open that box and see if there is a breaker or fuses inside. Normally, they are mounted to the house. The wiring from the condenser goes to this box... Called a disconnect box... Most times, there are fuses/breaker in this box, as well as a breaker in your homes main panel for the A/C... Check both...
