I am 34 years old and just found out 2 months ago who my father is. He called me out of the blue and stated he was my father and has always known he was my father. We have taken a legal dna test to confirm he is my biological father. Do I have any rights to establish legitamization and child support? This man has nevered offered my mom a diaper or a $1 for me. He came from a middle class family while my mom grew up extremely poor. I have always thought someone else was my father because quite frankly his family didn't want to be associated with my mother. I struggled for a long time financially and have incurred severe financial debt from college and having to do everything with no support (my mother has always worked small jobs in factories). This man has always had access to me and my family but decided to just reach out one day. What rights do I have?

You really have no rights. You are not owed anything, even if you were a minor still. Your mother MAY have been entitiled 20 years ago to collect some back support. Certainly not now.

Much too late to get any back child support. Only your mother could have done this on your behalf and now it's too late. You could, however, ask him for some financial help now but don't bank on him giving you anything. He may though, so don't take it to heart about my negative statement. You never know until you ask though.

Every situation is different. He may have been ashamed or embarrassed that he had a child with a woman below his status. Who knows. You do now know who your father is. Right now you have a hard choice to make, Do you want him in your life or not? If you do, then you need to start from today and build a relationship with him and his family. If not then simply tell him to bugger off and forget about him.

That's ridiculous... this man pops into your life and the first thing you think about is getting money?. OMG...
