Are you trying to have a child or trying to avoid having one.

If you are trying to avoid having one by figuring out when a woman is ovulating, forget it. The male sperm can live 3 days or longer; when you add the time the egg takes to come from the ovary down the falopian tubes to the uterus; there is a large window of opportunity for the egg to be fertilized.

So if this question is meant to gather information so that you can have unsafe sex; I advise against it and will say there is no safe time to have unprotected sex to avoid pregnancy.

If both you and your partner are planning to have a baby, many women know when they are ovulating. The best course of action is to simply have sex with your partner at all times of the month (except when she is mensturating) when you are trying to have a child.

The best time is just before or during ovulation.

If there is another egg that is still in the falopian tubes; it's quite possible. Remember, sperm can live 3 days or more, if the parties had sex while the woman was on her menstral, the sperm can live beyond that period (pun intended) and the ovary may have released another egg shortly after her period as well.

There is no safe time to avoid pregnancy with unprotected sex. I might add, even protected sex is no guarantee that there will be no pregnancy.

The point is, if you are going to have sex be prepared for the possibility and responsibility of being a parent. If you aren't ready for the responsibility of raising a child, then you have no business having sex.

Young people especially loose sight of that, all they see is the pleasure and don't want to accept the responsibility. Nobody (parents, teachers, society, media) teaches the responsibility side of sexual activity. Hence, those who are not even responsible to self govern their desires in face of potential consequences of their actions will choose again to be irresponsible and choose abortion rather than finally stepping up and taking responsibility and commit to the care and love of the child for the rest of their lives.

The simple answer is (especially if you are young), if you don't want a child, don't have sex.

Actually, the egg gets fertilized in the fallopian tube, not in the uterus. This is the reason that there are ectopic (tubal) pregnancies. Also, the egg is only viable for 24 hours once it is released from the ovary. It truly is a miracle we women get pregnant at all.

To reiterate what another member has already said... it would be helpful to know if you are trying to get pregnant or trying to avoid it.

While I completely agree with your points about the correlation between sex and children, I have to respectfully disagree with your assertion that a women still get pregnant while actively menstruating.

Anytime there is unprotected sex, of course there is a chance of pregnancy. (Not to mention STDs.) But women do not actively get pregnant while they are menstruating. And if a woman knows when she will be ovulating, she can use her own body's signs and schedule to do a form of natural family planning. Most women cannot do this because they do not know for sure when they will be ovulating, either because they don't know their bodies well enough or they don't have regular enough cycles. And I would never recommend natural family planning for a woman that is not with just a single partner and has not had a child before.

But again, I do appreciate your point about being cautious and not being sexually active if not prepared to handle the consequences. I have been a long standing advocate (and practiced it myself until marriage) for abstinence.

The best time (if pregnancy is the goal) is during ovulation, which is usually about 14 days after the first day of the woman's menstrual bleeding. But that is if a woman has a regular28 day cycle. So it varies depending on the woman.
