Good morning, I'm trying to get an idea on how much a plumber should charge for labor. I'm looking to have 3 things done:

1. replace a shower body.

2. raise shower riser a few inches

3. build a shower pan and ready it for tile.

All the walls are exposed already with existing piping there. The shower floor has a solid plywood subfloor and the pvc drain, 2", is in place from previous shower.

PS One guy quoted me by the hour @ $150 per and said its approx one day's worth of work more or less. This doesn't sit well with me so that's why I'm asking.

Best advice we can give you is to get 3 estimates from known plumbers in the area and then go with the estimate/person you are most comfortable with... ok?

We simply can't guess what materials/costs are involved in doing this job... especially the shower pan.. You going custom pan or pref-fab. Pan, for example?

If necessary call the local plumbing inspector and see if he can QUIETLY recommend any local plumbers that he trusts. Assure him you will never mention that he gave any names and he will be more likely to pop a couple names at you.

Sorry can't be more help. I'm going to bet that someone will come along here and tell you that plumber is charging too much... you decide. Get 2 other estimates!

Thanks Mark. Let me ask the question another way... What would a plumber charge for labor per hour? Lets exclude materials and such...

Again... sorry, but every area of the country charges different hourly rates.

In my state alone I have seen plumbers charge between $50 and $125 per hour per man... never mind across the country. I am also not a big fan of hourly jobs... better to get a set price and then no worries if guys are standing around smoking/chatting, etc... job gets done for set price.

I stand by my original post... get 3 WRITTEN estimates and choose best price or best plumber and go with them!
