I have been looking for a resusable furnace filter to cut down on the dust/particles, help the environment, and maybe to get back a littlle green. Any suggestions?

I have 2 heat pump central heat and air units and even though I change my filter every 30days (and sometimes sooner) the filters are always very dirty. There are 5 in the household and a smoker. We have an Ionic Pro air purifier that works very well so smell is not an issue, just really dirty filters and there is no brown or tar, just grey dust. I just cleaned my A coil and am trying to prevent it from getting dirty again for a while. I have been looking at the WEB Plus Permanent Electrostatic 1" filter but I am not finding any reviews on it.

I am basically looking for a good priced reusable filter, that will be better than the $2 cheapos that I currently use and will cut down on the dust and also decrease some allergens and other airborne particles. My concern is however that others have told me to only use the cheap filters as they let my unit "breath" whereas the reusable filters will decrease the life of my uint due to air flow restrictions and the thicker filters. Is this true or a myth?

If you talk to 5 people you`ll get 5 different answers,, I prefer the 2 dollar change every 30 day filters myself, and every 2 weeks if need be,, I like my furnace to breath,, but I have electric heat and it seems much cleaner than gas, not knowing what you have,, but would still probably feel the same

I mentioned the heat pumps above (I just left out the electric part), so I have 2 Electric Heat Pumps (I thought all heat pumps were electric, my apologies).

So do the more expensive reusable filters such as the WEB Plus filters decrease the life of my unit by decreasing air flow and not letting it breathe?

My thoughts,, yes,probably. I don`t know that particular brand, how do you clean it? How long does it supposed to last before replacement? How much you going to pay for them and how many will you buy in a years time? Divide that cost by $2.00 and see how many 2 dollar filters you could buy in a years time,, just wondering

Owe it is cost saving as it is a 10 year filter, you just pull it out and wash it and let dry an reinstall and comes with a 10 year guarantee for $21.99 at Home Depot or Lowe's either one.

But my main concern is if it will reduce the life expectency of my air unit by decreasing the air flow hince me replacing my unit sooner than if I just used the cheap $2 filters. So in the long run guees be better to stick to the cheopos?

The only way to find out is to have a HVAC contractor come to your home and do a pressure drop analysis of your system and see what the calculations turn out to be. No one on this board or any other board can tell you what will work best in your system because they have not tested your system and unless it is tested all else is bad guesswork.

This is the reason you never received you answer on this board. As professionals they do not really guess at things that could possibly cause damage unless it is what is called a no brainer and the no brainer's you can figure out for yourself since I am sure you have at least that capacity of thought.
