I was the owner of small business for nine years. I had to close in 2007. I was told I could not receive unemployment due to being self-employed, however, I received a paycheck and paid unemployment insurance. I realize too much time has probably passed but 1.5 year later I am still unemployed and I now my husband also lost his job and with the economic climate I think that I am entitled to my benefits. Thanks for reading this.

I believe you waited too long to file for benefits. You should have filed right away.

I did file right away that's when I was informed I could not get it but a friend has brought it to my attention that I was entitled. So a state worker that didn't feel the need to over exert themselves mis-informed me.

If that was the case I suggest you contact a supervisor and explain it to them. You may be able to refile if you had the proper deductions taken. The worker must have "misheard" you and only heard the self employed part. Technically you were not self employed then if you paid the taxes and had a salary. Either you were self employed or you received a paycheck - can't be both. Has to be either or.
