I am pregnant and have the worst cold ever. I really need to overcome this and get back to work to save for the baby. What are some ways I can get over this cold fast?

Plenty of bed rest and a good cup of decaf tea...

There are very few medications you can take while pregnant

A quick call to your ob's office should give you an idea of what they feel is safe. There isn't much that is safe to take while pregnant. But I second the decaf tea advice... it's great stuff. Drink lots of water and get as much sleep as possible.

While I was pregnant, anytime I got sick I just locked myself in my bedroom for the first 24 hours and slept as much as possible. That was the only way I survived all the colds.

(I think Benadryl and plain Sudafed are permissible but *please* don't take my word on it. Check with your doctor before taking so much as an herbal medication like Echinacea.)

Yeah I would say some decaf tea, maybe with some lemmon or honey in it.

Whoa... no to the sudafed till you ask your doc...

There's a warning label on the box against that

Also ask your doc on the benadryl... it doesn't have a strong warning but it does have a tiny one

Well my doc approved both while I was pregnant, but the Sudafed was for a pretty serious sinus infection. And the Benadryl was for, shoot. I can't remember. So it depends on the doctor and the situation. If it's just a cold, the best remedies are the tried and true, sleep and lots of liquids.

*EDIT* I've also read of doctors recommending Benadryl instead of more harmful anxiety medications in mild to moderate anxiety cases. But still, I wouldn't take anything without at least a courtesy call to my ob.

Our hospital's approved list of medications safe during pregnancy include Tylenol... anything Tylenol, Tylenol Cold and Flu, Tylenol #3, etc. Benadryl is also safe to use during pregnancy.

Well I know as long as it's approved by the doctor for sudafed because that's fda class c

And benadryl is class b (fancy talk for well maybe but not for some pregnancy)

But since you are pregnant the list of medications you can take have shortened and depending on the pregnancy. None of us have any medical knowledge of the pregnancy other than the doctor. So the doctor trumps our opinions.

So the doctor trumps our opinions.

Although mine is not opinion. Mine is direct knowledge as I work in an OB ward at a hospital. I know what is on the approved list and what is not.

Anything labeled Tylenol is okay, any one of the Tylenol products is approved to take, including Tylenol PM. Benadryl is prescribed by the OB/GYNs I work for to help a woman sleep if she is having sleeping problems. I am not at the hospital right now, so I can't speak for sudafed. I work again next Tuesday if I don't get called in tonight, so I will have to check out the approved list and hopefully post it for you.

I know you have direct knowledge the same way I do... I just mean that the doctor takes priority because nobody but the doctor knows all the risk factors.

The doctor is the one with the medical record

I didn't mean any harm and I'm sure you are very knowledgeable.

Try the old stand bys first... rest, plenty of fluids, saline nose drops for congestion (which may help a sore throat and cough), hot tea and honey (works well for a cough), etc.. Tylenol for discomfort/fever... usually best to avoid antihistimines and decongestants unless truly necessary. Your doctor can discuss the pros and cons with you. While many women will use these without a concern, individual circumstances can play a role in what, if any, medication would be best.

Thank you everyone.

I have been feeling like a complete trainwrek. My nose won't stop running, I have the worst sore throat I have ever had, I am congested like a mug, and don't even get me started on the headaches.

I took the day off today. I cranked the heat all the way up, drank about 2 gallons of orange juice, and have been trying to sleep.

Unfortunetly, My medical hasn't kicked in yet and I just found out I was pregnant a couple of days ago so I don't have an OB yet.

But I am hoping I will recover by next week.

Maybe try sitting in a steamy bathroom for your congestion... or use a humidifier if you have one. Don't go overboard with turning up the heat as it will be quite drying. Gargling with warm salt water may help with the throat, and popsicles as well. Also, try sleeping while slightly sitting up as this can also help with the drainage of the nasal passages.

You can always pop into a walk in clinic or health department if you feel really bad, things get any worse, or your sore throat lasts for more than a few days. Hope you feel better sooon!
