Should my boyfriend file child support even if he makes an agreement with the person he got pregnant? Is that the best thing to do? And if he does not want to put his name on the birth certificate does he have to?

He is better off with a support order because many guys assume that paying the child support without an order is sufficient. Then for whatever reasons the mother decides to go file support and is not honest that he has been paying and then he owes for times he has already paid and it may or may not be credited to him even if he can prove he provided for the child.

He can refuse to put his name on the because but if the mother fiels for support he will hae to go through a paternity test and then be declared the legal father.

He is better off with a court mananged support so it can be shown what he has paid.

You need to follow up further ?'s on the same post
I don't think it costs anything to file for child support.
You do have to have SSN's, birth certificates, etc...
You shouldn't need a lawyer simply to file.
Then if it is going to get complicated you can go for low income help if you qualify.

Is he filing for custody? The custodial parent is usually the one to file for support.

No he is not filing custody but can he suggest to her that it would be the best thing to do to keep things simple... he doesn't want to be with her and doesn't want any confusion... he wants to do this with the least bit of headache.

Well there is a court filing fee, in GA, 87.50

The issue is that if it is not an approved amount, he could end up owing 1000's in back support.
In GA he will be payig basically 17 percent of his gross pay. ( before taxes) for one child, In GA he will be expected to pay at least 1/2 of the child's medical bills including insurance. And can be asked to pay part of the child care costs also.

He does not have to have his name on the birth certificate, in fact he can't unless the mom agrees to putting it there.

Normally the mother files for the child support but the father can, plus he can ask for visitation.

Has the baby been born yet ? And if he or she files for support make sure there is some sort of custody agreement in there to go along with it. If he doesn't cover his bases now his little headache is going to turn into a migrain.
Also be aware as you observe because you may be looking into your future.
