We have recently had our roof reshingled, we had a leak before that and thought this would take care of the problem but it didn't. When ever it rains really hard I hear dripping in side my wall. At one point it was coming through my celing fan and shorted it out. I was told to get new gabel vents because the old ones were rotting and the water is going down the walls and setteling over my bedroom. I did that and got plastic ones. But That didn't work either. Coincidently I think the path has changed a little I here it dripping a little further away now. Its not a flat roof and there is no access to that part of the attick I don't know if there was one there before I bought the house and the owner closed it up. Do you suggest I cut a whole in my celing and try to see where the leak is? I have no clue what to do??

I am no roofing expert, but my guess would point to some bad flashing around something that protrudes through the roof. Prior to having my home re-roofed, I went nuts trying to track down a leak in my bedroom. It was near the chimney. I patched and tarred everything that I could think of in that vicinity. Once I had my old roof stripped off, I meticulously redid the crummy flashing around the chimney and no more leak. Tracking down a leak can be a bear. Good luck.

Thanks I'll try that first,beats cutting a hole in my ceiling!!

Do you have access to your attic space? You could look for signs of previous water entry, or get up there during a rainstorm and look for wetness.

Also, I have seen where gutters back up and even push water up under the shingles.

And of course if you have any vent pipes though the roof, those are always possible places also.

If your roof isn't to steep, go up on it w/ a hose. Start at the first vent. Don't spray water but take the knozzle off and let the water free flow on the shingles around the vent. The go from vent to vent, chimney to chimney. You will need patients being that you have no access to your attic and will have to wait until you see/hear a leak.
Your best bet if you know you have an attic area is to cut an access panel. It will make tracking the leak easier.
Some guys will also you use a non-staining dye to track leaks.

Thanks, It was the vent. I had replaced it but I guess I used the wrong caulking because there is no sign of it . I don't know where it is but the vent is peeling off on top. That's where the water is pouring in.
