My husband is paid as an e-4 in the USMC, received his lump sum reenlistment bonus in September 2008 while in the US. 41,500, with about 10000 going to taxes. He has no deductions that I know of, we married July 2008, prior to his reenlistment. We live together. He receives no govt funding at all.

Taxes this year how much of the bonus should he get back? Is there anything that can be done to get a better refund, or anything that could have been done? What is the best way to file this?

If any one of your is resident or U.S. citizen, file you tax return as married filing jointly.

Go to the base in which your husband is stationed and check out the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program run out of the community center.

They will know what to do to file your return.
