I'm replacing a ceiling light. I separated the wires with a knife and now have two sets of wiring that go to the ceiling electrical whit and black wires.
The insturctions say one will be round and one will be ribbed, and to attach the ribbed wire to the white supply wire, and attach the round wire to the other.

Problem is, I don't know which side it the HOT "black" and which side is the White, as the wires both look the same on each side.
One side of the wire does have the 2/0 black writing on it.
Is this the black "HOT" wire?

OK the black from the ceiling is you hot supply, the white is your neutral. Your new fixture has two wires but it sounds like they were encased in one piece of rubber casing and you had to separate them, right so far? The wires from the fixture, are they soild pieces of wire or a bundle of very small strands?

Thank you Ballenger1, I actually was able to reach someone at the company,(on a sunday), and the rubber casing I had to separate, made no difference whether went to black or white at ceiling. I put it together from there and all is good. Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it since I could not afford an electrician to come out and do it.
