I need tips to install a 6x10 heat duct in a wall. I have installed a wood burner and want to vent one of the heat runs into a large family room. The family room side is finished, the back of the wall is in my mechanical room and unfinished.

I have 2 - 8 inch vent opportunities with the new wood burner. I have duct work already, I'm just looking for clarification of how to attach the duct work to the existing wall. I have a 6 x 10 duct, a standard 16 inch centered wall, studs exposed, unfinished, on the furnace side and finished on the other (family room) side.

I would think that you measure for the opening, cut it out, and then attach the duct to the side of a stud, then frame around the top and bottom of the duct with tow new 2 x 4's 14 inches long. Screw the duct to the side, top and bottom, with the duct flush with the front edge of the sheet rock. Install vent cover over ductwork from finished room side and we're done.

That's better thank you Get some metal plumbers strapping it comes in a small roll at the box store. Look for a cardboard box about 1" thick by 8"x8" wide. Also get some self tapping sheet metal screws to use and attach the strapping to duct. The strapping holes are perfect for drywall screws heads to go through just right and the head not going through the strapping This will secure the duct real well to the studs weather its T strapped on stud before drywall or behind it. This is what we use in all our rehabs.
